Abstract:
This article examines maladaptive (unhealthy) perfectionism, the anxiety it causes, and its negative impact on the academic performance of distance learning students. It was provoked by the author's interest in positive psychology and its application in foreign language teaching, as well as the need to inform and attract the attention of students, teachers and parents to this problem ( „the dark side of the perfectionism“). Perfectionism is a characteristic way of thinking that, taken to extremes, could even be harmful, leading to reduced creativity, procrastination and stress. The article provides some guidelines for overcoming such thinking by reconsidering some basic beliefs, expectations, and goals.
