The COVID-19 pandemic has made a profound impact on every economic and social sector, forcing the urgent transformation of almost all spheres of human activity. The field of higher education was no exception. It was for the first time in history that digital skills became an absolute necessity, and the distance learning in a digital environment was unanimously acknowledged as the only available and virtually irreplaceable method of ensuring uninterrupted and effective instruction in the emergency situation. The present paper discusses and analyses the results of a survey conducted among students of engineering specialties of TU-Sofia concerning their perception of distance learning – strengths and weaknesses, difficulties and problems, viewpoints and attitudes. On the basis of the findings reported, the authors come to the conclusion that due to the rapid adoption of the hybrid format of course delivery, both students and academics need to embrace this form of instruction, further improving and successfully incorporating it in the contemporary educational context.
