Abstract:
The main goal of the present research was to investigate the values and the dynamics of certain vaginal parameters in bitches during the different stages of the sexual cycle and after some genital and extragenital influences. A total of 179 female and 27 male dogs were investigated between 2010 and 2013. The experimental animals were 1- to 8-years old, weighing 5,2 to 70 kg. The dynamics of average values of the electrical resistance of the vagina during proestrus in the bitch is characterized by a gradual increase, reaching a peak in the middle of the stage, followed by a slight decrease, and the occurrence of another larger peak during the estrus, coinciding with the day of ovulation. We could not identify specific limit values which correlate with the day of ovulation. On the first day of diestrus values of vaginal electrical resistance decreased significantly (p<0.001) compared to the last day of estrus. The dynamics of the average pH of the vaginal fluid during proestrus and estrus in the bitch is characterized by a gradual reduction in which reaching the lowest levels between 6.5 and 6.8 coincide with the time of ovulation. On the first day of diestrus pH values increased reliably (p<0.001) compared to the last day of estrus. The peak values of vaginal electrical resistance occured from 1 to 5, and the lowest pH levels-from 2 to 5 days after the measurement of the maximum 17β-estradiol concentrations (from 50.13 to 123.47 pg/ml) in bitches. At the same time the levels of progesterone were in the range between 4 and 10 ng/ml. Mating and artificial insemination cause a decrease (p<0.001) of the electrical resistance and vaginal pH and an increase (p<0.001) of the percentage of keratinized epithelial cells in vaginal smears of bitches compared to animals without insemination. The subcutaneous administration of aglepristone in bitches twice in an interval of 24 hours on 29-and 30-day after ovulation at a dose of 10 mg/kg m causes a significant decrease of vaginal electrical resistance (p<0.05) after the onset of complete luteolysis on 41.5±2.26 day after ovulation and increase the vaginal pH (p<0.05) after the onset of partial luteolysis on 32.5±2.26 day after ovulation. S. pseudintermedius, E. coli and S. aureus were isolated from the vagina of bitches in all stages of the sexual cycle in 22%, 19.3% and 10.6% respectively of the animals. The percentage of isolates belonging to one microbial species (53.8%) was significantly higher in diestrus (66.7%), estrus (61.5%), anestrus (57.1%) and vaginitis (58.3%) compared to proestrus (34.7%) (p<0.001). Between the stages of proestrus and diestrus and between estrus and diestrus there was a statistically significant difference (p=0.05 and p<0.05 respectively) for the number of isolated bacterial colonies with (+++) in the vaginal secretion in bitches without genital diseases.
