To analyse air pollution and its impact on morbidity amongst the population of Stara Zagora Municipality in the period 2009 - 2013, as well as to create a mathematical model of predicting morbidity levels. The air pollutants of primary importance to the municipality are: sulphur dioxide, dust, and hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen oxides and lead aerosols.
The literary summary describes the characteristics of each pollutant and its unwanted effects on the morbidity amongst the population in the municipality ba-ed on the number of occasions when medical aid is sought and when the patient is hospitalised.
Results: 1. During the monitored period from 2009 to 2013, air pollution exhibits a decrease in the concentration of each pollutant, as well as of the total indexes.
2. As regards morbidity based on the number of occasions when medical aid is sought, the leading diseases for the entire population are the diseases of cardiovascular organs, followed by diseases of the respiratory and genitourinary systems.
3. As regards morbidity of diseases that require hospitalisation, the leading diseases are the digestive system and cardiovascular diseases, followed by diseases of the respiratory and genitourinary systems.
4. Amongst nosological units based on the number of occasions when medical aid is sought, the greatest relative share belongs to hypertension, and acute catarrh of the upper respiratory tract, whereas in the case of hospitalised patients leading are the cerebrovascular diseases and pneumonias.
5. There is a tendency in Stara Zagora Municipality towards decreasing the morbidity based on the number of occasions medical help is sought and an increase based on hospitalisation as compared to the base year (2009). 6. The additive action of the combination of pollutants РМю+Рв aerosols affects class "Diseases of the cardiovascular organs" based for the entire population of the municipality, whereas SO2+PM10 considerably affects the class "New formations". 7. The enclosed model for predicting morbidity in connection with air pollution is relatively accurate (average margin of error from 0.61% to 2.59%) and can be used in any residential area.
